Henry Mckenna Bottled in Bond Reviewd

Henry Mckenna Bottled in Bond Reviewd

Henry McKenna Bottled in Bond is distilled by Heaven Hill in Bardstown, Kentucky. Heaven Hill is probably best know for their Evan Williams and Elijah Craig lines and a bit lesser known for Rittenhouse and Henry McKenna. Heaven Hill has the largest portfolio of Bottled in Bond whiskey by a huge margin: Evan Williams White Label BIB, Heaven Hill BIB, Old Heaven Hill 6 Year BIB, JW Dant BIB, J.T.S. Brown BIB, Mellow Corn BIB, Rittenhouse BIB, and finally Henry McKenna BIB. The Bottled in Bond act was very important because it kept distillers from adding all kinds of weird stuff to whiskey - some of which was hazardous. Bottled in Bond has the following requirements:

  • The liquor must be produced during a single distillation season (January to December)
  • The liquor must be distilled by one distiller at the same distillery
  • The liquor must be aged and stored in a federally bonded warehouse under government supervision for at least 4 years
  • The liquor must be bottled at 100 proof (50% ABV)
  • The labels must identify where the liquor was distilled and bottled (if location differs from distillery).

However, HMBIB is aged 10 years - 6 years longer than most BIB bourbon that can be found on the shelves. The other exceptions to the typical 4 year BIB offerings include Old Heaven Hill 6 Year BIB and the Colonel E. H. Taylor line from Buffalo Trace. There is a lot to be said for age stated, 100 proof bourbons in the current trend of vanishing age statements.

This bourbon shares its name with an Irish distiller who immigrated to Kentucky in 1837 and brought his family's whisky recipe with him. At least that is the legend that Heaven Hill has on their website. I'm more interested in this bourbon than the man himself so lets move on to the tasting notes.

Distillery: Heaven Hill Distilleries, Inc.

Recipe: 75% Corn/13% Rye/12% barley

Proof: 100

Age: 10 Years

Barrel #: 1097

Barreled on: 4-1-03

Pour: 1.5 oz neat in a scottish glencairn

Nose: Sweet corn, vanilla, Oak, honey, nutmeg, apples baked with cinnamon

Body: Medium and warm.

Palate: Vanilla, light brown sugar, allspice, cinnamon

Finish: Sweet, Caramel, black pepper

Rating: 3/5

The black pepper and caramel finish on this juice is fantastic! The extra age on this BIB offering really stands out compared to other BIB offerings in the sub $30 price range. This was also my first bourbon from Heaven Hill and really got me interested in their other products including Elijah Craig (12 year and barrel proof), Evan Williams (white label and vintage), and Rittenhouse Rye BIB. Considering the $30 price point and 100 proof strength this is a solid every day drinker.

Be on the lookout for Henry McKenna BIB store picks. Heaven Hill has a program that allows certain stores to pick a barrel and have it bottled with their name. Word on the street is some of these store picks actually exceed the regular HMBIB offering in terms of flavor. However, single barrels can vary greatly and so do palates.
